What is it that triggers birth after X days gestation?

what is the mechanism that causes a human to be born after 273 days gestation or an elephant after 624 days or rabbit after 28 days, how does the birth alarm clock go off at just exactly the right time and not too early or too late, is it related to the size of the foetus?
